Residents in the Silver Spring area are on high alert after a raccoon suspected of carrying rabies bit two individuals this past Monday. WUSA9 reported that the attacks occurred on the 1800 block of Franwall Avenue, near Colt Terrace Neighborhood Park, prompting public health announcements from Montgomery County officials. The raccoon has been captured in the vicinity of Arcola and Ventura Avenues in Wheaton, a detail confirmed by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services.
The risk of rabies, a virus that aggressively attacks the nervous system, has sparked genuine concern. The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services has sternly reminded the public about the dangers associated with the disease.
According to The Daily Voice, rabies has been a persistent threat in Maryland since 1983, primarily affecting raccoons, skunks, bats, and even domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats. "Rabies is considered a medical emergency," the department warned, emphasizing the urgency of responding to potential exposures.
The Montgomery County officials are appealing to anyone who may have been bitten or who suspects any form of contact with this raccoon to act swiftly. The alert advises citizens to call Montgomery County Animal Services at 240-773-5925 to report exposure or if any more information regarding the raccoon's recent activities is needed. Residents have been advised to exhibit caution around raccoons that show signs of aggression, abnormal friendliness, or disorientation.
