Thousands of Spectrum customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties were left without internet services this past Sunday due to what the company has described as a deliberate act of vandalism. The fiber optic lines in the Van Nuys area were cut in multiple locations, disrupting the telecommunications infrastructure and leaving wires scattered on the ground, as reported by ABC7.

According to CBS News, the vandalism occurred early Sunday morning and Spectrum has since been working with local law enforcement to apprehend the culprits, offering a substantial $25,000 reward for information, and although Spectrum's fiber optic cables do not contain copper, which is often the target for such criminal acts they are still being vandalized and such incidents can adversely affect not only customers but also local businesses and essential emergency services.

Spectrum officials conveyed to CNN that "Criminal acts of network vandalism have become an issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just Spectrum," highlighting how the telecom industry has been grappling with the increase in precious metal prices and the consequent uptick in vandalism-related incidents. The outage in Los Angeles is another stark example following a similar disruption last month in Kansas City, where, according to local reports, Spectrum also posted a reward when its infrastructure was similarly compromised.

Repair efforts have continued through the subsequent hours after the incident with Spectrum's teams working around the clock to restore service; additional crews were brought in for the task, however, there is still not a definite timeline for full restoration, as stated by the company on its social media platforms and as Spectrum further confirmed to ABC7, saying, "We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank you." The majority of the affected customers have had their services restored by Sunday evening. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact Spectrum directly or reach out to the local law enforcement authorities.
