In an effort to commemorate the influential figures of local conservation and recreation, St. Johns County Parks and Recreation has posthumously inducted Beverly Fleming into its Hall of Fame. The recognition took place during the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners meeting yesterday. Fleming, who passed away, was revered for her extensive contributions as the county's premiere naturalist at the Trout Creek Community Center, a post she held for over a decade.

Her move to Florida in the 1970s marked the start of a lifelong commitment to the preservation and appreciation of Florida's unique ecosystem. Fleming's hands-on approach not only made her a self-taught naturalist and botanist but also led her to take in and rehabilitate injured wildlife like her owl Sam. In a statement obtained by St. Johns County Parks and Recreation, Assistant Director Jamie Baccari heralded her impact, declaring, "Beverly Fleming was someone who inspired everyone she came into contact with during her time with our department." She lauded Fleming's ability to encourage others to deepen their understanding of the local environment.

Ahead of the national celebration of Parks and Recreation Month this July, St. Johns County is actively creating a lineup of events and programs to engage the community. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, the theme for the 2025 Parks and Recreation Month is "Build Together, Play Together," a call to strengthen community bonds through shared recreational experiences.
