A tense standoff at a Garland motel ended in gunfire on Wednesday, with one suspect killed during an encounter with SWAT officers and a second individual found dead inside the motel room. The deceased suspect has been identified as 52-year-old Shawn Dylan Burt from Hutchins, Texas, while the second deceased individual found was 69-year-old Donald Bailey Sr. of Dallas. Bailey reportedly died from a gunshot wound and had been dead for several hours before the police shooting happened, according to the Garland Police Department’s social media post.

The sequence of events unfolded when Garland Police officers responded to a disturbance call at Motel 6 located at 12721 LBJ Freeway involving a tenant and hotel management. During the initial attempt to engage with the tenant, the individual pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting them to seek cover. Due to the aggravated assault charge and the high-risk situation, the department's SWAT team was called in to manage the threat. Negotiators tried to communicate with the barricaded suspect, who remained unresponsive following the failed negotiation attempts. SWAT officers deployed tear gas to coax the suspect out.

When SWAT team members approached the motel room's window, the armed suspect confronted one officer from within the room, leading to the officer discharging his weapon and striking the suspect, who was later found dead at the scene. As per the Garland Police Department's update, "a handgun was recovered from inside the motel room," and the Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively looking into the suspect's actions and Bailey's death.
