Honolulu will experience breezy trade winds today, with a slight decrease in wind speeds expected from Wednesday through Friday. Winds are forecast to increase again over the weekend. Early morning showers are possible, especially along windward and mountain slopes, according to the National Weather Service.
Infra-red satellite imagery from the National Weather Service shows bands of clouds moving into mountain areas due to easterly trade winds, likely bringing brief early morning showers. A stable weather pattern is supported by an inversion layer between 6,000 and 7,000 feet. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM HST for coastal waters near Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island, with possible easing after tonight, limited to typically windier zones.
South-facing shores will have small surf today as the current south swell weakens, with a new small south swell expected to arrive by Wednesday. East-facing shores will have rough and choppy surf, and surf on north-facing shores will stay minimal. Trade winds may cause moderate turbulence, especially from the south to the west of island mountains, with breezy conditions continuing into the evening before decreasing mid-week. An AIRMET Sierra remains in effect for windward and mountain areas due to possible mountain obscurations, which may clear later today, as reported by the National Weather Service.
