The streets of Montgomery County have been under the vigilant watch of the Summer Traffic Task Force since May 21, as the unit enters its fourth intense week of operations. With a keen focus on curtailing alcohol-related offenses, the special team, which includes members from multiple agencies, is putting in full-time work to keep post-graduation and holiday revelers in check.
Operating through the end of July, a time fraught with celebrations that too often lead to impaired driving, the task force has conducted a substantial number of traffic stops. In a release provided by the Montgomery County Department of Police, since the operation's inception, there have been 358 traffic stops, resulting in 426 citations and 510 warnings, alongside 49 DUI arrests made solely by the task force officers.
However, the effectiveness of the drive extends beyond those numbers, as the task force does not operate in isolation. As the department clarified, the arrests mentioned are specific to task force efforts and do not include the additional DUI arrests made by regular patrol officers in the line of their everyday duties.
The task force is a coordinated unit with contributions from various corners of law enforcement, including the MCPD's AIU and AES officers, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the MNCPP (Park) Police, the Maryland State Police's SPIDRE and Rockville Barracks, and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
