A suspect has been apprehended in connection with a stabbing that resulted in a fatality inside the DC Jail, according to an announcement by the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident, which shook the facility and the local community, took place on May 12 at about 2:30 p.m., when police discovered the victim, Carlos Shelley, a 29-year-old Southeast D.C. resident, who succumbed to severe stab wounds.
The police were summoned to the Central Detention Facility on D Street Southeast following the incident and found Shelley in a state where revival efforts were futile; he was declared dead at the scene, his life suddenly extinguished in the stark confines of a jail cell, an environment where he should have been under close watch, inmates should be safer, though we know that's often not the case, because violence can simmer and explode even within the walls that are meant to deter it. Metropolitan Police Department's reports detail the discovery of Shelley and the subsequent determination of his death by the DC Fire and EMS personnel who arrived at the scene.
In the wake of the turmoil, extensive investigations led to Marquise Jones, a 26-year-old individual also incarcerated at the DC Central Detention Facility. Yesterday, Jones was formally charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed (Knife), and a booking order for his arrest was issued by the DC Superior Court. The severity of the charge reflects the nature of the crime.
