It's a breath of fresh air for Tampa Bay Trail enthusiasts as the Rocky Creek Bridge officially reopens. The critical piece of Hillsborough County's popular recreational pathway, which underwent significant repairs after being flagged as unstable in 2024, is back in action. Commemorated with a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, the bridge restoration is a $2.2 million project that promises renewed and safe travel for the trail's numerous visitors.
According to Hillsborough County's announcement, the work was comprehensive, shoring up support structures, swapping out old decking for new, and upgrading the safety features with high railings. Community Investment Tax dollars pooled into the project, and bonds were called upon during the design stages. Notably, the bridge now sports two 63-foot spans and meets ADA compliance standards, opening up the pathway to a more diverse group of users.
But the impact of this project extends beyond just the bridge. The Upper Tampa Bay Trail, known for its 11.45 miles of paved pathways catering to a variety of outdoor activities, sees about 300,000 visitors each year. These adventurers, ranging from cyclists to rollerbladers, can once again travel uninterrupted thanks to the bridge's strategic placement connecting key areas along the route.
The revamped bridge also enhances access for surrounding nature preserves. The Rocky Creek Trails Nature Preserve and Peterson Road Park are again reachable from the Wilsky Boulevard Trailhead, broadening the horizons for explorers and those seeking a reprieve in the scenic vistas of Rocky Creek. With an interior width matching the 12-foot approach trail, the bridge also has the capability to support emergency vehicles, a thoughtful addition to the infrastructure update.
