Three individuals are now in custody following a six-month investigation by the South Oakland Narcotics Intelligence Consortium (SONIC) into a suspected human trafficking and money laundering operation linked to several Southeast Michigan massage parlors, as CBS News Detroit reported. Stations in Novi, Farmington, and Livonia were among the sites investigated, where it was discovered that women, many brought in from other states, were manipulated into performing commercial sex acts under the guise of legitimate massage therapy.

According to the ClickOnDetroit coverage, the women involved in the operation were coerced into sex work and forced to labor in exploitative conditions the enforcement effort spanned multiple agencies, including, but not limited to, the Novi Police Department, West Bloomfield Police Department, Farmington Hills Police Department, Shelby Township Police Department, and the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, this collaboration ultimately led to the arrests on Wednesday, May 28.

The WXYZ report further details that the West Bloomfield Police believe the suspects to have profited from this illegal enterprise, and with support from community organizations such as Common Ground and Care House of Oakland County, the police were able to identify the three key individuals responsible for the operation.
