
A man was shot and killed by a Shelby Township police officer after fleeing a traffic stop on the afternoon of June 3rd. The encounter, which evolved rapidly from a routine traffic intervention into a fatal chase, occurred in the vicinity of Van Dyke Avenue and 22 Mile Road, as reported by CBS News.
The sequence of events began to swiftly unfold around 3:15 p.m., when a white Dodge Caravan was pulled over by police. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the solo occupant of the Caravan, a 41-year-old Troy man, exited the vehicle and began to run away. He led the officer on a foot chase, was tased after disregarding orders to stop, but continued to flee before ultimately drawing a weapon.
Detailed accounts of the pursuit reveal that upon drawing his weapon, the suspect pointed it in the direction of the pursuing officer. In response, the officer discharged their firearm after giving verbal commands to drop the weapon, as described by police radio communication and subsequently relayed by FOX 2 Detroit. "Shots fired, he's armed with a gun, not moving though," a voice declared over the radio during the incident.
This chain of events escalated into a tragic ending as the man was struck by the officer's shots and later died at a local hospital from his injuries. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, a protocol followed in the wake of such incidents, detailed in a news release from the Shelby Township Police Department, was stated to the Detroit Free Press.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office has taken charge of the investigation, but as of yet, they have not released further details surrounding the traffic stop or the shooting. The name of the deceased has not been disclosed, and authorities are currently reviewing video footage as part of their investigation into the incident, according to coverage from local news sources. Nevertheless, residents in the area, such as MacKenzie McNutt, expressed their shock at the violent events that unfolded, telling CBS News, "It doesn't happen in our neighborhood, it's bizarre that something like this would ever happen here."
