On a sun-scorched afternoon last Wednesday, the stillness of Moorpark was violently shattered by a collision between a Metrolink train and a semi-tractor trailer at a railroad crossing. The Ventura County authorities have confirmed the death of the truck driver, 23-year-old Jose Avila, following the incident at the private railroad crossing at Montair Drive. According to the official report released by the Moorpark Police Department Traffic Bureau, the truck, laden with lemons and bound south, met its tragic fate when struck by an eastbound train at approximately 2:14 PM.
The initial investigation suggests Avila was ejected from his vehicle upon impact. Despite efforts by nearby workers and sheriff's deputies to quickly administer life-saving measures, Avila was pronounced dead at the scene. The train carried 17 passengers at the time of the collision, with one reporting minor injuries. The aftermath saw the rail line operations on this segment of the Union Pacific Rail Line brought to a standstill, as responders worked through the wreckage and investigators began to piece together the events. Meanwhile, Metrolink and Amtrak effectively arranged alternate transport for their passengers disrupted by this incident.
Sergeant Shawn Holzberger, from the Moorpark Police Department, has urged anyone with information regarding the collision to come forward. His statement emphasized the role eyewitness accounts might play in shedding light on such incidents, saying, "Anyone who might have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Deputy Manley at 805-532-2700."
