The University of Texas at El Paso is shaping the future of education by integrating artificial intelligence into the classroom with a brand-new master's degree program. Announced yesterday, this unique Master of Arts in Education, outfitted with a concentration in AI, aims to provide educators with the necessary skills to enhance their teaching practices using AI technology. A direct quote from UTEP Mathematics Education Chair Olga Kosheleva, captured by UTEP Newsfeed, explains that "Teaching educators how to make practical use of AI will make them more efficient, from reducing the time needed to create lesson plans to creating more robust means of assessing students' progression."
As reported by the same UTEP release, spearhead of the degree program and Associate Professor Dr. Kosheleva believes that the most significant benefit of AI in the classroom is the increased time it will afford teachers to engage on a personal level with their students. The new degree offers an extensive course roster, including "Foundations of Generative AI," "Ethics, Culture, and Society in the Age of AI," and "Data Science for Educational Professionals," prepping students for various roles such as curriculum developers and educational coordinators.
While emphasizing the college's mission to transform the educational landscape, Clifton Tanabe, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education, stressed that UTEP is positioning itself as a pioneer in effectively employing AI within the educational realm. In his words, Tanabe told the UTEP Newsfeed, "The ability to leverage AI is in high demand across the region and country and this degree addresses that need."
