Anson County resident Jeremy Jamaine Harwell, aged 51, finds himself embroiled in legal trouble after being hit with felony charges for insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. The North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey's Office detailed the arrest of Harwell, from Wadesboro, who allegedly tried to cheat the system with counterfeit documentation to bolster a claim to Southern General Insurance Company, ultimately pocketing $400.
The NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division alleges that the incident took place on September 23, 2024. Harwell, they say, fabricated statements and forged invoice documents, which now stands as the foundation for the criminal accusations against him. He was taken into custody on June 20 and was later released on a $20,000 unsecured bond from Anson County Jail, according to a statement obtained by NCDOI.
Insurance Commissioner Causey didn’t mince words about the impact of insurance fraud, stating, “Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet.” His remarks underscored the cost of fraud, noting that approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar is lost to fraudulent activities. According to an NCDOI report, Causey emphasized his commitment to fighting insurance fraud through aggressive investigation and prosecution across the state.
Harwell is scheduled for a court appearance in Anson County District Court on July 8, leaving the community and legal observers to watch how the case unfolds.
