In a big step for inclusive education, Waipahu High School’s 'Ohana of Excellence Academy (OEA) became the first special education class in Hawaiʻi to earn college credit. Thirteen OEA students completed a job skills course at Windward Community College, helping them build confidence and prepare for work. It's a great example of real progress in making education more inclusive, according to the Office of the Governor.
Principal Zachary Sheets spoke about the universal nature of the opportunity his school is providing, stating, "It's very important that to offer this to our students in the 'Ohana of Excellence Academy so that they have the same opportunity as everyone else. And now we're proud to say that every single academy on our campus has early college opportunities for their students," in an interview obtained by the Office of the Governor. Waipahu High, nationally recognized for its career academies, is now ensuring that its special education students are not left behind.
The completion of the course was marked by a mock job interview, serving as the final project for the participating students, underscoring the practical nature of their education. Eunice Fukunaga, Director of the OEA, was pivotal in bringing this college-level course to her students. The focus for these students, according to Fukunaga, is to "obtain full-time employment," a goal the course directly supports, as stated by the Office of the Governor.
There's a palpable sense of achievement and promise among students, educators, and parents alike. Principal Sheets encapsulated this sentiment by noting the emotional reactions of the students' families: "When you saw the students' parents tearing up because their students are going to have this opportunity, I think you know how special it is," Sheets told the Office of the Governor. "Breaking stereotypes and barriers are just the next steps to show them that it is possible." This achievement is not just a milestone for Waipahu High School, but a beacon of hope for educational inclusivity.
