A Wake County man has been charged after setting a vehicle on fire during an alleged domestic dispute yesterday, according to local authorities. The Wake County Sheriff's Office reported to the scene in the 1030 block of Laurel Leaf Road near Zebulon, after receiving a call about the incident unfolding around 1 p.m. CBS17 states that the man identified, as Byron Denell Hammond Jr., is accused of igniting his girlfriend's car, and deputies charged him with burning personal property, communicating threats, domestic violence, along with two counts of injury to personal property.
Authorities detained Hammond and, according to court records, he was not granted bond. He is slated to appear in Wake County Court the following Thursday morning. ABC11's coverage of the event highlights the allegations against Hammond, further noting the charged misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence.
The violent brush of fire that took over the car was quelled by firefighters, caught in a video submitted by a viewer. "Neighbors told WRAL News they saw Hammond dousing a car with gasoline and lighting it on fire," which led to footage capturing the aftermath. Law enforcement officers were filmed handcuffing a man near a burned vehicle and, a gas can was sighted on the ground beside the car according to WRAL News.
Beyond the arson, arrest records also accuse Hammond of threatening his girlfriend and causing damage to personal items such as her television and cellphone.
