After over four years of investigation and legal proceedings, a jury has delivered a guilty verdict in a case that shook the local community. Alvin Alexis Cruz Garcia, a 27-year-old Washington, D.C. resident, was found guilty last Friday of second-degree murder while armed, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. The decision comes following a four-day trial over the brutal killing of Ramon Gomez Yanez at Ogden Market in Northwest D.C., an incident that was captured on surveillance in March 2021.

The U.S. Attorney's Office detailed that on March 23, 2021, around 8:28 PM, Gomez Yanez had parked his car and visited the Ogden Market, as was his custom. The altercations began after he returned to find Cruz Garcia urinating too close to his vehicle. Surveillance footage, albeit silent, depicted a verbal altercation followed by Cruz Garcia striking Gomez Yanez to the ground, then proceeding to kick and punch him in the head multiple times violently. Gomez Yanez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Judge Todd Edelman of the Superior Court has scheduled sentencing for August 1. Despite there being no audio on the surveillance footage and no eyewitnesses who could directly link Cruz Garcia to the scene from the video, diligent police work inevitably led to the conviction. The Metropolitan Police, with aid from the Metro Transit Police, managed to track Cruz Garcia using a series of CCTV cameras along the 14th Street corridor and through the Metro Transit system. This relentless pursuit of justice resulted in a witness who could identify Cruz Garcia in a Metro Rail car video, alongside other corroborating pieces of evidence.

The case's prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Jin Park and Katrenia Shelly, who meticulously built the case against Cruz Garcia. The Metropolitan Police Department's dedicated efforts, along with the Metro Transit Police Department, underscored the resolve to ensure that those responsible for such violent acts are held accountable.
