In a notable intersection where nature meets accessibility, the Lighthouse of Pinellas is teaming up with Friends of Weedon Island and Florida Sea Grant for a day of tactile discovery. The Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center located at 1800 Weedon Drive NE, becomes a classroom under the sky tomorrow, with an event tailored for children who are blind or visually impaired. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., these young explorers will engage in a series of sensory-driven activities amidst the preserve's sweeping landscapes.
"Weedon Island Preserve offers a unique environment where children can engage all their senses to connect with nature," Liz Childress, education outreach supervisor at the preserve, shared in a statement. Children will roll up their sleeves for hands-on activities like seine-netting in Tampa Bay, and they are set to experience the nuanced textures of archaeological artifacts and animal pelts, their world expanding with every touch and sound. This initiative not only draws the community closer to nature, but also champions the uncommon courage, it takes to perceive the world differently, as per Pinellas County's release.
The event at Weedon Island Preserve seeks to nurture confidence, and independence in these young minds, reinforcing their bond with the world around them. Supported by the generosity of the REI Cooperative Action Fund through a grant to Friends of Weedon Island, such initiatives underscore the commitment to enhance well-being by encouraging outdoor experiences. A part of the grant will be allocated for integrating braille signage among the preserve's exhibitions, a thoughtful addition to make the center's wealth of information more accessible.
Spanning 3,190 acres, the Weedon Island Preserve is a treasure trove overseen by Pinellas County, boasting diverse ecosystems that weave together a rich tapestry of natural and cultural history.
