The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is joining a nationwide effort called Operation Dry Water to reduce boating under the influence during the July 4–6 holiday weekend. Wisconsin will lead the campaign with a national kickoff event at South Bay Marina in Green Bay on July 2 at 10:30 a.m. The public and media can attend in person or virtually. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that boating while impaired is illegal and unsafe, urging people to keep alcohol off the water during the holiday.

Alcohol is the main known cause of recreational boater deaths and increases the chance of accidents, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. As part of Operation Dry Water, both boat operators and passengers are encouraged to stay sober. “We want everyone to enjoy Wisconsin's beautiful waterways this holiday weekend, but safety must come first,” said Major April Dombrowski. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also advises people to wear life jackets, take online boater education courses, and be cautious on the water.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local law enforcement will be on the water during the July 4–6 holiday weekend as part of Operation Dry Water. The focus is on preventing alcohol use while boating. Boaters are reminded to wear life jackets, stay alert, and check river and weather conditions. The message from Major Dombrowski is: "Enjoy the waters sober and know your limits." More information is available in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources release.
