In an effort to accommodate attendees of the annual Summerfest event, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has decided to reopen the College Avenue park-and-ride lots, which were previously closed due to concerns related to homelessness and public safety. Located in the northeast and southwest quadrants of the Interstate 43/94 and College Avenue interchange, these lots will serve festivalgoers on select weekends in June and July, as confirmed in a statement obtained by WISN.
The announcement specifies that the lots will be available from 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays through 1 p.m. on Sundays for the weekends of June 19–22, June 26–29, and July 3–6, this announcement provides updated transportation access for attendees of one of Milwaukee’s major events. WisDOT, as shared by TMJ4 News, has noted that vehicles left in the lots after closing hours may be towed at the owner’s expense. The reopening is intended to improve traffic management and support a more structured shuttle service to and from Summerfest.
According to a news release from WisDOT, as reported by FOX6, the park-and-ride lots will support shuttle services aimed at facilitating efficient transportation for festival-goers. WisDOT has advised attendees to follow all posted parking regulations to prevent any disruptions during the event.
The temporary reopening of the park-and-ride lots is intended to manage increased attendance during Summerfest but does not address the conditions that led to their initial closure. The lots were closed last year due to a rise in homeless encampments and safety concerns, issues that remain present near freeway overpasses. As the city prepares for the festival, no official plans have been announced regarding continued services or support for the homeless population after the event. Current efforts are focused on transportation logistics for Summerfest, according to WISN.
