Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently announced the expansion of Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) eligibility to include additional counties impacted by severe storms and flooding. As of yesterday, Burnet, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson counties have been added, according to a statement from the Governor's office. This extension comes in response to the Major Disaster Declaration issued by President Donald J. Trump, acknowledging the significant impact of the natural disaster.
Eligibility for DUA extends to workers and self-employed individuals who have been rendered jobless due to the damage inflicted by the severe weather. Speaking on the impact, Governor Abbott stated, "Texas stands with these communities as they work to heal and recover. With more counties eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance, more hardworking Texans will have the resources and support they need to move forward," as noted in the official statement. Texans affected in these areas are instructed to either apply online via Unemployment Benefit Services or call TWC at (800) 939-6631 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, ensuring they mention their application pertains to the Hill Country flooding.
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) advises those hit by the flooding to submit their applications for DUA by September 4. DUA provides a safety net for individuals who've exhausted regular unemployment benefits or do not qualify, and for those who've lost work or sustained injuries as a direct consequence of the disaster. This includes those who were slated to start work in the disaster area as well as individuals who have become the primary providers for their household due to the disaster. Proof of employment or impending employment at the time of the disaster needs to be submitted within 21 days from the DUA application filing date. Failure to do so will lead to a cessation of the benefits and a necessity to repay any funds received.
To facilitate the claims process, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) recommends submitting proof for DUA claims through the UI Submission Portal when possible. Alternatively, documents may be submitted by fax or mail. TWC also provides job search resources, listings, and training opportunities through WorkInTexas.com. Residents affected by flooding are encouraged to report damage to homes or businesses via the iSTAT damage survey at damage.tdem.texas.gov. These reports may help officials assess the disaster’s scope and support efforts to include additional counties in the Major Disaster Declaration.
