The annual Anthrocon furry convention has once again demonstrated its philanthropic stripes, this time to the tune of nearly $90,000, all in support of a Pittsburgh-area cat rescue organization. Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue, a no-kill, volunteer-run nonprofit based in McDonald, was the chosen beneficiary of this year's fundraising efforts. This decision has paid off in spades for the small charity. According to a CBS News report, the organization is reeling in a "bit of shock" at the overwhelming support that has poured in, with the total funds raised sitting comfortably over $89,000.

Anthrocon, which has made Pittsburgh its home since 2006, brought in an estimated 19,000 attendees over the Fourth of July weekend, a seething cauldron of creativity, camaraderie, and now, charity. Sandi Eaton, director of Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue, was thrust into the heart of this fervent display of generosity. She described the experience as "mind-blowing" and humbling, expressing gratitude for the unexpected financial windfall. As the shelter struggled with expenses after bringing in many special needs cats last year, the funds were a welcome relief. "One guy came up to our merch table. We had a donation bin, and he put $500 into the donation bin," Eaton recounted in a TribLIVE interview.

Various methods were employed to secure donations for Nose 2 Tail at Anthrocon, including a "Bucket Brigade," merchandise sales, an auction, and raffles. The efforts far surpass the typical annual intake for the rescue, which usually hovers between $20,000 - $70,000. Eaton shared with TribLIVE that these donations will not only keep the rescue running but will also contribute to the development of a better facility, moving them closer to their dream of expanding their operations.

Historically, Anthrocon has been an economic boon to Pittsburgh. Visit Pittsburgh noted the convention was expected to generate nearly $22 million in local spending. The convention has a tradition of supporting local nonprofits, with total donations exceeding $340,000 since its inception in 1997. After setting a record last year by donating $100,000 to Gray Paws Sanctuary, Anthrocon continues to make a significant impact on animal welfare organizations.
