In an innovative push to actively involve the Arlington community in city planning, local government officials have rolled out an interactive board game dubbed 'Growing a Better Arlington'. The city's comprehensive plan aims to use this game as a tool to gather valuable input from residents to guide future development. According to the City of Arlington, participants get to play urban planner, making critical decisions about housing, employment, education, and recreational spaces.
Designed for groups of 2 to 6 players, the board game sets out to have players balance the various facets of urban growth collaboratively. With 'Dream Coins' at their disposal, each decision made will potentially shape Arlington's landscape over the next two decades. The public will have access to 'Growing a Better Arlington' at every location of the Arlington Public Library from mid-July, with options to check out the game or play it in-house.
The concept isn't merely for entertainment. The outcomes of these game sessions will be channeled directly into shaping the land-use and urban development strategies for Arlington. This interactive approach to city planning makes the process more accessible and allows for a broader range of community insights.
A community event scheduled for July 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library, will further allow residents to engage with the game and each other. The event, requiring no RSVPs, is set to bring together community members in an informal setting to collaboratively envision the future of their city. For those unable to attend, the city promises there will be more opportunities to get involved and play a role in the decision-making process.
