A high-speed chase that started in South Los Angeles concluded near the Santa Monica Pier on Monday, leading to the arrest of a driver wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, along with the unexpected custody of a small dog. The pursuit initiated around 12:30 p.m. when Los Angeles Police Department officers attempted to pull over the silver sedan, as reported by CBS Los Angeles. The driver, whose identity and the specifics of the alleged assault have not been disclosed by the LAPD, led police on a chase reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph on the 10 Freeway.
Upon reaching Santa Monica, the driver engaged in erratic behavior, including circling at the entrance to the pier and, momentarily, driving into oncoming traffic, a maneuver that sent pedestrians scrambling for safety. KTLA noted the surrender occurred just before 1 p.m., after the driver realized there was no escape route past the pursuing officers.
The conclusion of the chase saw the driver lying facedown as police moved in, an event captured on video near the intersection of Ocean and Colorado Avenues. According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the suspect was taken into custody without incident, and the dog, which had been in the sedan during the chase, appeared uninjured. The white dog with brown spots was seen exiting the vehicle and wandering the area before hopping back into the open driver's side door.
The future of the dog, whose connection to the driver remains unclear, is in the hands of the LAPD as they seek out a friend or family member to care for the pet. Failing that, the dog will be transported to an animal shelter, as detailed in a report by NBC Los Angeles. The incident caused a stir in Santa Monica, with the authorities detaining not just an armed suspect but an innocent canine caught up in the fray.
