The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is gearing up to unveil its expansive new addition early next year, with construction on the West Infill project bringing travelers a four-floor expansion to navigate. This growth, part of the ongoing Journey With AUS campaign, is stationed from the western end of the airport's concourse center stretching to the terminal's roadway, where fliers will soon find an increased 75,000 square feet of airport real estate at their disposal, as detailed in a recent blog post from the City of Austin's official site.
The lower level of this sizable development will boast the completion of the Outbound Baggage Handling System promising a boost in baggage screening efficiency, with Project Manager Steven Real proclaiming, "It’s a much faster system," and his excitement for this floor's particular advancements is evident and with the mechanical elements in place and testing underway, it is hoped this system will not only support increased traveler activity but also curtail potential delays emanating from AUS.
Department of Aviation employees, the workhorses behind the Journey With AUS program, will find their own space to thrive with new office constructions on the apron level, inclusive of a serenity-inducing wellness room destined to serve new mothers and those seeking respite from the airport buzz, Real added, asserting, "It will also allow for quiet meditation."
Elevated to the concourse level, the airport's infrastructure will broaden to include three new ticket counters helping to alleviate the traveler surge from the soon-to-be-defunct South Terminal; this addition will accommodate six additional ticketing positions, meanwhile, the environmental conscience of the project shines through with the integration of wood baffled systems sourced responsibly, “It’s being integrated in the public spaces to soften the space and provide that natural element within the building,” Real said, and with new artwork installations supplementing the visual fidelity of the airport, passengers can anticipate a gestalt of both aesthetic and functional enhancements in their transit experience.
Security processes are set to streamline as the West Infill project introduces Checkpoint 4, broadening TSA's reach with 6 to 8 fresh lanes intended to usher passengers more fluidly through the necessary pre-flight rigor, while existing checkpoints will undergo a renaming scheme to aid in navigation, these upgrades lay part of a string of developments underpinning the mezzanine's undisclosed new lounge and a dedicated HVAC system crowning the roof ensuring a temperate environment throughout the expanses of both this new construction and the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal.
This construction fury promises to culminate in Spring 2026 with crews currently applying the final touches in the form of “drywall and paints and finishes,” as Real shared, ushering in a new era of AUS's capacity to accommodate the burgeoning passenger demands, the West Infill itself a testament to both architectural foresight and pragmatic refinement standing as a 3-star Austin Energy Green Building, poised to meld seamlessly with the airport's broader aesthetic defined in part by the 2019 Nine-Gate Expansion—its completion, a beacon of travel comfort and efficiency on the horizon for Austin's voyagers.
