It was a regular day at the Progreso International Bridge when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers took a pedestrian into custody. The man, identified as 19-year-old U.S. citizen Roberto Medina, was wanted in Austin for a serious sexual assault charge. According to a release from the CBP, the arrest took place on Monday, July 14 as part of their continuous efforts to screen individuals and maintain community safety.
The Progreso Port of Entry, as the summer travel peak swells, has the CBP officers working diligently to keep watch over the coming and going of travelers. It was during this heightened vigilance that Medina was referred to a secondary inspection. According to CBP, Port Director Michael Martinez was quoted saying, "Apprehensions like these exemplify what our officers do every day to secure our borders and keep our communities safe." The suspect was transported to secondary, where biometric verification confirmed the existence of an outstanding felony warrant for sexual assault from the Austin Police Department.
Following the positive identification of the warrant, Medina was then handed over to Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies who took charge of his transport to jail, where his case will proceed to adjudication.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) plays a crucial role in such apprehensions, providing a centralized database for law enforcement to share critical information, including outstanding warrants. The NCIC has enabled officers to arrest individuals wanted for a wide range of crimes. "Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law," reminds the CBP in their statement.
