The Federal Hill community in Baltimore has been left grappling with a surge of vandalism after a recent crime spree saw dozens of vehicles and several businesses damaged. Over the past weekend, approximately 55 cars were vandalized, as reported by the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association. Local businesses, including Papa John's, Facci Ristorante, and Federal Hill Cleaners, also fell victim to the property crimes, with extensive damage reported by these establishments. Han Kim, the owner of Federal Hill Cleaners, described the scene, according to WBALTV, stating upon arrival at his business, "I found the broken window, the door, I was shocked."
Amidst the devastation, community leaders have voiced their deep-rooted concerns and frustrations. In interviews obtained by local news outlets, Jen Covino, the public safety chair of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, recounted the high frequency and escalating nature of property crimes within the neighborhood. "Unfortunately, property damage is something that has become frequent," Covino mentioned in a statement, as detailed by FOX Baltimore. Her personal experiences in 2023, including an incident where a brick was hurled through her window, narrowly missing her newborn baby, underscore the community's concern for safety and the longing for more effective responses from the local authorities.
In response to these events, city officials have pledged to devise new strategies to address public safety and quality of life issues, according to a statement by District 11 Councilman Zac Blanchard provided to WBALTV. The Baltimore Police Department is reportedly developing a new strategy for neighborhoods, including Federal Hill and Downtown, although details of these plans are currently sparse. Residents remain eager to witness how these strategies will translate into tangible improvements in their day-to-day lives in the face of such disruptions.
