House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) had some strong words following a recent development in Washington. It has been reported that Anthony Bernal, Chief of Staff to First Lady Jill Biden, invoked his Fifth Amendment right during a deposition about alleged unauthorized executive actions by President Biden's aides. According to the House Oversight Committee, Comer expressed concern over transparency and accountability. "It’s no surprise that Anthony Bernal is pleading the Fifth Amendment to shield himself from criminal liability," he said.
In his deposition, Bernal refused to answer questions regarding whether unelected officials or family members assumed presidential duties or if he was ever instructed to lie about the president's health. Comer noted, per the House Oversight Committee, "This is a historic scandal and Americans demand transparency and accountability." The representative didn't mince words, suggesting that actions might have been taken due to the president's rumored cognitive decline. These accusations and the plea have stirred up controversy as the public and the committee seek clarification and answers.
The issue at stake revolves around the integrity of the presidential office and the actions taken by those in its orbit. Chairman Comer has assured the public that the committee's investigation will continue, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the truth. "We will continue to pursue the truth on their behalf and examine options to get the answers we need," Comer declared, as cited by the House Oversight Committee.
