Boerne residents looking to combat water waste and learn about eco-friendly practices have a new local resource at their fingertips. A 13-week Water Conservation Series, spearheaded by water expert Larry Sunn of Rain Bees, promises to educate attendees on a variety of sustainability topics. Starting Wednesday, August 13, each session will run from noon to 1:30 pm, with a different subject being tackled every week through November 19, as reported by the Patrick Heath Public Library.
According to the Patrick Heath Public Library official announcement, the series kicks off with a deep dive into aquifers. Featuring Dr. Sunn and Dr. Grainger as key speakers, the inaugural session will clear common misconceptions about aquifers and discuss their depletion and replenishment rates. Over the series, other sessions will cover rainwater catchment systems, the ecosystem-friendly xeriscaping, and even the ins and outs of beekeeping—no bee suit necessary.
Of particular interest to those with a green thumb, the series includes hands-on demonstrations. One such workshop will be the "Applied Planting & Pruning" session on November 12, led by Adrian Valdez, wherein attendees will make actual pruning cuts. And for the aspiring beekeepers, Charlie "Bee" Agar will unveil the “Buzz of Beekeeping” on September 10 as an introductory class for beginners, as stated by the Patrick Heath Public Library.
Environmental stewardship comes in many forms, and Boerne's Water Conservation Series exemplifies this variety. Sessions such as "Pollinators – Bees, Butterflies, & Hummingbirds" on October 1, presented by Joanne Hall, aim to appeal to all levels of pollinator gardening enthusiasts. And with topics ranging from "Lawns & Native Grasses" to the essential "Find and Fix Leaks at Home," the workshops offer practical advice applicable to the everyday household — under the guidance of experts like Dr. Larry Sunn who, running to find common leaks on October 8, will navigate attendees through their homes' nooks and crannies, as detailed by the Patrick Heath Public Library.
While the thought of discussing compost might not appeal to everyone, on October 22, Dr. Steven Grainger hopes to change that by breaking down procedures for efficient composting. The overarching aim of the series is the fostering of a community educated and empowered to make more sustainable decisions relating to water usage and conservation, as per the Patrick Heath Public Library.
