Following a recent incident of subway violence, a Brooklyn resident has been sentenced in connection with the case. Alexander Villafana, a 22-year-old from Cypress Hills, received a 10-year prison term after pleading guilty to second-degree attempted murder, according to a statement from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
On November 28, 2023, at approximately 5:35 p.m. aboard a northbound C train nearing the Ralph Avenue station, Villafana became involved in a verbal altercation with a teenager that escalated when he produced a firearm and discharged multiple rounds. A 17-year-old male was struck in the hand, and a 52-year-old bystander attempting to move away from the area was hit in the ankle, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office details.
Highlighting the gravity of the offense, District Attorney Gonzalez stated, "This was a terrifying act of gun violence that endangered dozens of commuters and left two people injured. Firing multiple shots on a packed train showed a blatant disregard for human life, and this sentence holds the defendant accountable for his actions," as per a press release.
Following the shooting, Villafana fled to Pennsylvania and attempted to avoid detection by changing his appearance. He was located and arrested by the Regional Fugitive Task Force on December 12, 2023. The arrest and prosecution, handled by Senior Assistant District Attorney Omar Harding of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, reflect a coordinated effort to support public safety and pursue accountability for the victims.
