In a move aimed at addressing customer concerns, Young Kim, CEO of Jubilee Marketplace, implemented price reductions at the Brooklyn branch of his supermarket chain. The repricing effort affects the majority of the 20,000 products at the Greenpoint store. The decision followed feedback from customers and online discussions on Reddit regarding pricing. While the adjustments may affect profit margins, Kim stated the goal is to align store prices with community expectations.
"It’s all hands on deck right now," Kim told NY1 regarding the repricing efforts. The pricing adjustments come as customers like Art Uro and Lian Calvo praise the store for its responsiveness to community needs. This reflects changing economic conditions and Kim’s stated approach to prioritizing customer feedback, a practice he has followed since beginning his career in store operations.
"I’m going against, you know, everything I was taught," Kim said in an interview with ABC7NY. The grocery industry typically operates on narrow profit margins, making Kim’s decision to reduce markups a significant financial risk. Early responses from customers and the possibility of increased foot traffic indicate that the outcome of this approach remains to be seen.
Kim has publicly shared his concerns, telling ABC7NY, "Terrified. Just because this is the industry norm of the markup that we do put, which means that if we drastically drop our prices all of a sudden, that also means we could potentially close." Among the recent changes, the $2.75 hamburger at the store's café stands out as an example of the lower prices now available to customers. The repricing initiative is not intended as a short-term adjustment; Kim is considering expanding this pricing approach to other locations as part of a broader strategy focused on increasing value for customers.
