The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for central North Carolina, indicating that residents should brace for a sweltering heatwave. According to their latest update, NWS Raleigh forecasts sunny skies with high temperatures approaching the low 90s today and climbing. With the mercury set to soar near triple digits over the weekend into next week, conditions are ripe for heat-related illnesses.
"A prolonged period of dangerous heat is expected to develop as early as Friday and persist into next week," the Hazardous Weather Outlook warns. In this stretch, heat index values could range from a scorching 100 to an oppressive 110. Such intense heat, paired with high humidity and minimal respite after sundown, poses a major to extreme risk for heat-related maladies. Considering the forecast, locals are advised to take necessary precautions, hydrate and seek air-conditioning during peak heat hours.
No significant adverse weather is anticipated today or tonight. But as Friday dawns, the onset of excessive heat will turn the screw on the region. As stated by NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook, "Hot temperatures, high humidity, and minimal overnight relief will result in a major to extreme risk of heat related illnesses."
According to the Hazardous Weather Outlook, the community's weather spotters may stand down for now, as "Spotter activation is not expected at this time." Still, everyone should stay alert. It’s important to know how to stay safe and cool during this heat, and to keep an eye on official updates. With hot nights offering little relief, possible record highs during the day, and no quick break in sight, central North Carolina is heating up — in more ways than one.
