After significant rainfall and flooding events in Central Texas have surged water levels, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) has taken action to methodically release water to manage the rising tide. On Monday, officials confirmed that at least two floodgates at Buchanan Dam, a major infrastructure controlling Lake Buchanan, were to be opened for the first time since 2019 to handle overflow. According to KXAN, this measure became necessary to avoid water from cresting the spillway. Currently, Lake Buchanan stands at a near-brimming 96% full.
This maneuver, aimed to prevent flooding in nearby areas, is predicted to swiftly increase water levels in the downstream Inks Lake, which lacks floodgates and is expected to see overflow into its own spillway, then into Lake LBJ and downstream lakes. The water released from Buchanan Dam will eventually make its way to Lake Travis, which has recently returned to its average level for the first time in four years. On another note, recreational boating on Lake Travis has been banned due to the floods, with additional precautions urged for those navigating other Highland Lakes' waters. "The 'Sometimes Islands', small landmasses that appear when Lake Travis is low, could soon vanish beneath the waves," stated KXAN's meteorologist Jim Spencer.
In an effort to further address the flooding, the LCRA detailed that one floodgate was opened at Wirtz Dam and several were opened at Starcke Dam, both in Burnet County, as per a report by KVUE. These releases come with advisories for the public to maintain a safe distance from the Highland Lakes due to potential high levels of bacteria and debris resulting from recent torrential rains.
Buchanan Dam itself is a considerable structure standing at roughly 145.5 feet tall and spanning over 10,000 feet across, equipped with 37 floodgates. While it currently helps to contain a lake at 97% capacity with an elevation at roughly 1018 feet, the dam and its associated water systems are undergoing a significant test against the elements. The public is being kept informed and cautious as the situation develops and officials work to maintain balance within the region's interconnected waterways that have long shaped the local landscape and life.
