Green Cove Springs residents and members of the surrounding communities are invited to join the Clay County Fire Rescue on August 12 for the opening ceremony of their newest state-of-the-art fire rescue station, Station 20. Located at 1305 Idlewild Avenue, the new facility features advanced safety systems and provides much-needed additional space for personnel, equipment, and fire rescue vehicles. The event, set to begin at 10:00 AM, marks the latest effort by local and state officials to prioritize public safety and service expansion, according to an announcement from Clay County.
The opening of Station 20 also marks the introduction of Clay County's first 9/11 Memorial. The centerpiece includes two nine-foot steel beams that once formed part of the 68th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. These pieces honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and represent the nation’s strength during difficult times. Clay County Fire Rescue and the International Association of Firefighters Local 3362 received the beams in 2011 through an application to the World Trade Center Artifacts Program by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
In addition to the steel beams, the memorial will also feature a Survivor Tree seedling. The tree, grown from the seeds of a Callery pear that survived the devastation at Ground Zero, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and renewal. Clay County Fire Rescue's efforts to acquire a sapling of this tree were fruitful in 2021, making this living piece of history available for public viewing and reflection. The Survivor Tree accentuates the memorial's intent to serve as a lasting honor to the spirit of those affected by the events of 9/11.
Throughout the opening ceremony, county leaders will inform attendees on ways they can help honor the legacy of first responders at this new 9/11 Memorial. Details regarding parking arrangements have been thoughtfully planned, with guest parking available at the nearby Green Cove Springs Junior High School. Electronic signage and law enforcement officials, on hand to assist with traffic direction, guests can easily find their way to the site. Additionally, Clay County Fire Rescue personnel will be offering shuttle services as needed.
