A man was critically injured and ejected from his vehicle in a rollover crash on Interstate 695 in Washington D.C. on yestetrday morning, leading to a complete shutdown of all westbound lanes near Exit 2/M Street Southeast. FOX 5 DC reported that the incident happened in the morning hours and resulted in significant traffic disruptions.
The crash was severe enough to necessitate the arrival of a U.S. Park Police helicopter, which was deployed to quickly transport the injured man to a local trauma center. In a detail provided by DC News Now, the DC Fire and EMS Department had posted just before 10:20 a.m. about the accident and urgently called for the man's airlift due to the critical nature of his injuries.
Lanes remained closed throughout the day, causing traffic to snarl as drivers were advised to seek alternative routes. WJLA noted that the blockage continued for several hours, with officials working to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the accident.
By late afternoon, AlertDC confirmed that the westbound lanes of I-695 had been reopened around 5:30 p.m., easing traffic delays. However, the circumstances leading to the accident remained under close investigation. DC Police also emphasized the earlier traffic situation on social media, stating: "No access to I-695 from both directions of I-291. Expect heavy delays," according to the information provided by DC News Now.
