A fatal crash investigation is underway in Clayton after a car was found wrecked in the front yard of a residence on Front Street, leaving one person dead. The grim discovery was made earlier today, around 2:30 a.m., on the 200 block of West Front Street. CBS 17 reported that the vehicle had smashed into a ditch before coming to rest
The Clayton Police Department, responding to the incident, found that while a home was close to being hit by the car, it had not been directly impacted. This clarification came after initial reports suggested a house had been struck in the accident. According to WRAL News, the driver of the car was confirmed dead at the scene.
Further details described by ABC11 indicate the car's destructive path through downtown Clayton. After plowing through a dead-end, the car proceeded to take out a mechanical box and left live wires scattered in the grass. Having crossed over railroad tracks and a steep hill, the vehicle ultimately ended up on the front lawn of a home at the intersection of North Front Street and North Lombard Street.
In the aftermath of the collision, a neighbor expressed their shock to ABC11 on having awoken to the chaos, with police lights illuminating the predawn scene. As the day breaks and the neighborhood contends with the somber reality, the Clayton Police Department continues to investigate the tragic trajectory that led to this fatal ending, piecing together the moments that preceded the deafening stillness of a crash-scene's aftermath.
