Detroit has been named the most stressed city in the United States, according to a recent report from WalletHub. The survey highlighted numerous factors contributing to its residents' stress levels, ranging from economic struggles to health and safety concerns. With an 11.4% unemployment rate, the highest in America, and a median household income hovering just over $38,000, Detroit's economic distress is acute. The city also bears the heaviest poverty rate in the country at 31.5%.

"The city has the highest unemployment rate in America, at 11.4%. It also has the lowest median household income after adjusting for the cost of living, at slightly over $38,000," said Adam McCann from WalletHub in an analysis of the findings, CBS News Detroit reported. Beyond economic troubles, the survey cited Detroit's high crime rates and the prevalence of stressed family structures, including high separation, divorce rate, and the proportion of single-parent households, as contributing factors to the overall stress experienced by its denizens.

The WalletHub report, which compared more than 180 cities across 39 key metrics, found that cities with struggling economies, high crime rates, and poor public health infrastructure tend to elevate stress levels amongst inhabitants. "Some stress is out of our control, due to issues with family, friends, or employers. However, where you live can play a big role in how stressed you are," Chip Lupo, a WalletHub Analyst, expressed in a news release sent to WLNS.

Furthermore, Detroit’s financial concerns are exacerbated by residents having very low median credit scores, estimated at 624, which is considered in the bad credit range. The burden of this financial stress is felt keenly by Detroit’s residents, who carry the weight of the city's economic hardships, many of which have remained unresolved in the long term, pointed to WalletHub’s in-depth analysis. Regarding health and safety, the report also revealed Detroit's struggle with high obesity rates and one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation, factors that unquestionably contribute to the city's pervasive sense of urgency and distress.
