The Detroit Police Department is actively pursuing leads in a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy on the city's east side last Sunday night. According to FOX 2 Detroit, gun violence erupted between vehicles in the Cadillac Heights neighborhood, with a stray bullet fatally striking the child inside a residence.
As per CBS News Detroit, Police Chief Todd Bettison expressed the unpredictable nature of gunfire in residential areas, acknowledging that, "Unfortunately, when shots are fired in a residential neighborhood, you don't know where it's going to end." The police department has identified a red Jeep as a vehicle of interest, and shell casings were found scattered around the crime scene near Anglin Street and Stender Avenue.
This area benefits from ShotSpotter technology, a gunshot detection system that alerted officers to the shooting, enabling them to respond swiftly. WXYZ reports that officers arrived approximately 30 seconds after receiving notifications from the system. They found shell casings and are seeking information on a red Jeep and a black sedan believed to be involved.
Bettison urged the public to assist in the case during a news conference, "To the persons who did this. To the persons. Do yourself a favor. If you didn’t pull that trigger, you need to be telling us right now who did, cause a baby is dead," as recounted by WXYZ. The chief also speculated that one of the individuals involved in the exchange of gunfire might have been wounded, and is asking the community and local hospitals to be on the lookout for anyone with untreated gunshot injuries.
To aid in their pursuit of justice, Detroit authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or submit a tip through DetroitRewards.TV website.
