A high-speed chase in Macomb County that resulted in the death of an Uber driver has led to a 16-year-old Detroit boy being charged with murder. WWJ Newsradio reported that Daniel Shane Canales is facing second-degree murder charges for the crash that killed 28-year-old Alex Habib. Canales was arraigned on Thursday and remains held at the Juvenile Justice Center in Mount Clemens after the judge denied bond.

During the early morning hours on July 12th, according to the ClickOnDetroit report, Canales reached speeds exceeding 130 mph and ran a red light at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Warren, colliding with Habib's vehicle. Habib, who leaves behind a wife, a 1-year-old daughter, and a 3-month-old son, was driving for Uber at the time and also worked as a server at Jim Brady's in Royal Oak.

Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido has called the case "deeply troubling." As per FOX 2 Detroit, Lucido emphasized the gravity of charging a juvenile as an adult, stating, "The decision to charge a juvenile as an adult is never made lightly. In this matter, we proceeded with careful and thorough consideration of how to best uphold fairness and justice." Lucido also highlighted the importance of consequences and accountability, regardless of age.

Additional charges for Canales include first-degree fleeing a police officer, driving on a revoked or suspended license, and unlawful driving away in a motor vehicle. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Habib's family with funeral expenses and the care of his children. The high-speed chase also involved a second minor, a 12-year-old, who was in the car with Canales and is being processed through juvenile courts. Canales' next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.
