As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day tomorrow, the District Government has announced changes to its services for the holiday. However, residents will still have access to many critical services, including emergency shelters and mental health support, according to a release by the Metropolitan Police Department.
For those needing a safe place, all low-barrier shelters will remain open 24 hours, such as the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter and Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter, providing essential services for individuals experiencing homelessness and the Downtown Day Services Center will also welcome individuals from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis; the Center mandates wearing a wristband provided upon entry, for those seeking refuge, the District government has kept doors open at various shelters like New York Avenue Men’s Shelter at 1355 New York Avenue NE and Pat Handy Women’s Shelter at 810 5th Street NW, among others.
Mental health support will be readily available with services like the DC Stabilization Center and Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program operating round the clock, while the Department of Parks and Recreation ensures that outdoor parks, pools, and splash parks will be accessible to the public during their regular hours of operation. For further details on the available services during the holiday, individuals can contact the DC Shelter Hotline or reach out to the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311.
However, not everything will be business as usual; the Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced that there will be no household trash, recycling, or food waste collection tomorrow, sliding service to Saturday, July 5, and construction work will be put on pause with the exception of permitted activities resuming the following day, Lane restrictions and reversible operations will be suspended for the day, it’s important for residents to note that the regular schedules will resume the day after Independence Day, as the Fort Totten Transfer Station will reopen to the public for bulk trash and recycling services, all these modifications are crucial to ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted celebration of our nation's independence.
