A Delta Air Lines flight was compelled to execute an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after its left engine erupted in flames shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 18, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirming the time of the emergency landing at approximately 2:10 p.m., as originally reported by KTLA. Delta flight 446, bound for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, was seen with visible flames on its Boeing 767-400 aircraft, captured by a bystander and published on the YouTube channel L.A. Flights.
Passengers aboard the flight experienced tense moments when the crew detected the engine fire and took swift action to return to LAX. The plane maintained control throughout the unforeseen event, a necessary maneuver noted in the Aviation A2Z report. In-flight radar data revealed that the aircraft first climbed out over the Pacific Ocean, then looped back inland over Downey and Paramount areas, explained Aviation A2Z. This allowed time for the crew to complete safety checklists and prepare for an emergency landing back at LAX.
Upon landing safely, the 226 passengers and nine crew members, including two pilots and seven flight attendants, exited the plane normally and were reassigned to a different aircraft. Delta Air Lines issued an apology for the interruption to passengers' travel plans, emphasizing the importance of safety. "As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and crew, the flight crew followed procedures and safely returned to the gate. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel plans," a Delta representative told Fox News Digital.
The unsettling sight of fiery engines caused a stir among those watching from the ground as well. "WOAH, look at that! Woah, what's going on? That's not good guys," were the words capturing the anxiety of that moment, as expressed by Josh, co-owner of L.A. Flights. These comments were part of the critical footage shared by the channel, as detailed in the coverage by Fox News Digital. Emergency response vehicles were observed surrounding the aircraft shortly after its return to the tarmac, highlighting the urgency with which both the crew and ground services reacted to ensure safety.
Comments from purported passengers and their families surfaced on the L.A. Flights video post, expressing relief and commendations for the flight crew's professionalism. "I was on this flight, sitting in the middle aisle," one viewer commented. "I couldn’t see the smoke or fire, but some people saw it. It was really scary for those 10 minutes! Everyone remained very calm, even if we were internally panicking. Very thankful to be on land now," as highlighted in the report by the Los Angeles Times. The FAA has initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire, according to agency statements.
