A wave of violence swept through Durham, leaving a 17-year-old boy dead and a man fighting for his life in what became a tragic Wednesday night. The shots rang out at the Damar Court apartments on Sherwood Drive, and by the time the echoes faded, Dominic Chappell, identified by friends and family, had lost his life. As CBS17 reported, Chappell was a recent graduate of Lakeview School, his sights set seemingly on the future—with plans to buy a car and go to college.
Devon Burnette, a close friend of the deceased, expressed his grief and exasperation, imploring, "Put the guns down, man," as presented in a statement obtained by CBS17.
He went on to painfully recount the many losses suffered in the past year. Meanwhile, in a neighborhood still grappling with the sudden void, balloons and candles surface to commemorate a life cut down too soon, according to ABC11.
Given voice to the deep community loss, Durham's Mayor Leo Williams spoke of the squandered potential and the dreams of parents now dashed, as captured in an interview with ABC11. Remembering Chappell not only as a victim but as a generous spirit, Devon Burnette told ABC11, "He was a good dude, a kind dude. Anything you need, anything you could ask for he got you. If you ask for $5 he would give it to you." These words highlight an untimely loss that extends beyond the individual to the very fabric of the community.
Durham police arrived promptly on the scene to discover the critical situation, which included multiple unoccupied cars and apartments struck by gunfire. A grim reminder of the indiscriminate nature of such violence as reported by WRAL. The other victim of the shooting, a man also sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently in serious condition at a local hospital. Specifics around the incident still remain shrouded, as no further details or arrests have been to publicly come to light.
