Durham County reports a significant drop in crime for the first half of 2025, with the Durham County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) announcing a 26% decrease in "The Top 8 Crimes," according to a mid-year crime report released on Monday and obtained by CBS17. These offenses encompass murder, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary/breaking & entering, larceny (including vehicle break-ins), motor vehicle theft, arson, and sex offenses, a sharp contrast to the previous year's figures with only 31 incidents against 42 from the same period in 2024.

In a statement reported by ABC11, Sheriff Clarence Birkhead commended the diligent work of his deputies and their active collaboration with the community in driving down crime rates accolades that fall not unto deaf ears but into the embrace of a populace seeking solace in safety Sheriff Birkhead also noted the seizure of 69 firearms and the recovery of 17 out of 25 reported stolen guns. Further cementing these results, DCSO recovered 17 stolen vehicles in June alone, highlighting the relentless pursuit of justice and order.

Complementing DCSO's positive announcement, data from the Durham Police Department (DPD) echoes a similar decline in shootings across the county. WRAL reports a comparison between 2024's 377 shooting incidents up to mid-July to 301 for the same period in 2025 with 130 people having been shot by mid-July 2024 and the number significantly dropping to just 92 as of mid-July 2025.

The quarterly crime reports presented to the City Council further illustrate the trend, with the first quarter showing a 22.6% decrease in overall violent crime, and while the second quarter report is pending, it will include comprehensive data from April through June Birkhead further urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly, emphasizing the community's role in maintaining this downward crime trajectory, an appeal towards collective responsibility underpinning the success of DCSO's efforts, as per WRAL's report.
