It's official: crime is down in Durham County. The Durham County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), led by Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead, recently released crime data showcasing a significant drop in criminal activity for the first half of 2025. According to a news release on the DCSO website, there has been a 26% decrease in the "Top 8 Crimes" compared to the same period last year. These include offenses ranging from murder to arson.

Contributing to this downtick, DCSO's figures indicate a notable reduction in overall criminal incidents, with 31 reported from January through June 2025, versus the 42 recorded during the same timeframe in 2024. Sheriff Birkhead praised the diligent efforts of his deputies and crime units, who have been tirelessly working in concert with community members. "We applaud the hard work of DCSO deputies patrolling 24/7 and specialized crime units who are working together with our community to reduce crime," he said. Birkhead also encouraged residents to vigilantly "see something, say something," to quickly notify law enforcement about any suspicious undertakings.

The month of June alone saw the recovery of 17 stolen vehicles throughout the county. These recoveries represent a concerted effort to clamp down on vehicle theft, which has evidently been met with success given the current statistics. The DCSO indicates that these vehicles were reportedly taken not just from Durham but surrounding areas as well, illustrating a broader impact beyond county lines.

Another critical facet of the Sheriff's Office's work is their interaction with firearms. Over the first six months of 2025, DCSO reported 111 firearm incidents. Out of these, a total of 69 firearms were seized, with 25 reported as stolen and 17 thankfully recovered or found. The diligent work of law enforcement to safely remove these weapons from potential criminal hands decisively contributes to the broader effort to maintain the downward trend in crime rates.
