U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Eagle Pass Port of Entry recently made a substantial drug bust; intercepting a vehicle they found to be carrying over half a million dollars' worth of heroin. The seizure, which took place at the Camino Real International Bridge, was confirmed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in a statement that indicated the interception of 26.96 pounds of heroin, hidden within tortilla presses and candy dispensers.

During a routine inspection on Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers selected a Dodge pickup truck for further scrutiny – the vehicle was attempting to enter the U.S. from Mexico, and it was through the combined efforts of technology, a canine team, and the on-the-ground experience of the officers that the illicit cargo was spotted and secured; U.S. Customs and Border Protection's use of nonintrusive inspection equipment played a crucial role in the identification of the narcotics. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's official report, the estimated street value of the drugs amounted to approximately $517,072.

"Our frontline CBP officers utilized their inspection skill, experience, technology and intercepted a sizable amount of heroin during a routine inspection," said Port Director Pete Beattie, Eagle Pass Port of Entry, emphasizing the expertise of his team in preventing the contraband from entering U.S. territory. The interception underscores U.S. Customs and Border Protection's dedication to its border security mandate, with Beattie reaffirming the agency's resolve in a comment to the press.

The driver and passenger of the truck were arrested after the drug seizure and are under investigation by DEA agents. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized both the drugs and the vehicle. This case shows the ongoing challenge border officials face as they work to stop illegal drug smuggling and protect the country.
