In a solemn gathering fraught with raw emotion, a community in Eastpointe, Michigan, came together yesterday to honor the memory of Jennifer "Jamma" Harris. As reported by CBS News Detroit, the 39-year-old mother of six and McDonald's manager tragically lost her life in a stabbing incident at work last Thursday.
Surrounded by hundreds of community members, the grievance was palpable as the family released balloons outside the restaurant. Harris' second eldest daughter, Anttenisha Griffin, heartbreakingly reflected on the loss of her mother, telling CBS News Detroit, "It hurts so bad that my mama is not here." Having been allegedly stabbed by Afeni Badu Muhammad, a disgruntled employee, Harris' family now faces a future without her presence.
The CBS News Detroit detailed the vigil where Antonia Griffin, Harris' eldest daughter, voiced her resolve to remain strong for her siblings, stating, "I just got to be strong and just think, this is what my mama would want me to do." The establishment of the official Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund was announced by franchise owner Yusef Alcodray during the vigil, designed to provide immediate support for Harris's children covering essentials from housing to education, as noted by The Detroit News.
A passage through not just a restaurant but the heart of a community Harris was hailed for, Alcodray remembered her as a "generous and patient person" who would tell customers to "Have a blessed day," according to The Detroit News. Unfortunately, the suspect, Muhammad, now faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent. Muhammad's defense against the charges will soon be mounted at a preliminary examination scheduled for July 30.
Amidst the grief, concerns about illegitimate fundraising efforts have surfaced. "They need to take those fake GoFundMe accounts down and let her rest in peace," Harris' mother, Hazel Johnson, insisted in a statement obtained by The Detroit News. To combat the fraud, the family specifically directed generous supporters to the Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund.
