North Carolina's former fire chief of Denton, Brandon Allen Dorsett, finds himself facing serious allegations. The 37-year-old was arrested and charged with misusing government computers and two counts of fraud, both considered felonies. This development comes following an investigation conducted by the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Insurance's press release.
Authorities claim that Dorsett, between March 1, 2021, and July 10 of this year, misused the town's equipment to falsely generate training records and certified rosters for the Denton Fire Department. He was taken into custody on July 11 and has since been released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Dorsett is now scheduled to appear in Davidson County District Court on Aug. 4. In a statement obtained by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey underscored the duty of fire departments to be "above board" and emphasized the gravity of the allegations, given the sacrifices firefighters make in service to their communities.
While the specifics surrounding the charges against Dorsett remain scant, the impact on the local community may test their trust in public servants tasked with their protection. The falsification of official documents relating to firefighter training could potentially compromise not only the integrity of the fire department but also the very safety of the residents they are sworn to protect.
For his part, Commissioner Causey praised the special agents responsible for bringing this case to light, reiterating the commitment to transparency and ethical conduct among those who serve the public. "While I understand that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, firefighters and members of the town need to know that the fire department's actions are above board," Commissioner Causey explained. "Firefighters are dedicated public servants and sacrifice a lot to protect their community," he told the North Carolina Department of Insurance. As the investigation continues to unravel the circumstances leading to the arrest, Dorsett awaits his day in court to directly address the claims against him.
