The sudden death of Saniyah Cheatham, an 18-year-old woman, while in the custody of the NYPD has left a family in deep grief and in search of answers. Cheatham was found unresponsive in her cell at the 41st Precinct in the Longwood neighborhood shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday and was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital a short time after, as reported by NBC New York. Initial statements by the police suggested suicide, but Cheatham's family has since raised serious doubts, continuously to demand accountability and transparency from the authorities.
The events leading up to Cheatham's arrest seemed banal—a July Fourth cookout at Crotona Park, followed by an argument and physical altercation with her girlfriend, according to NBC New York. Her mother, Thomasina Cheatham, said, "She was happy and I was happy to see her," stressing that her daughter's disposition was not self-destructive. Police have yet to confirm all the details, but the sequence of events has since spiraled into a contentious dispute of narratives.
The death that the NYPD initially characterized as a suicide was later termed a "medical emergency," before it adopted the label of "suspicious." Contacted by News 12, the medical examiner has stated that the cause of death is "pending further study" following an examination. On Tuesday, the Cheatham family, supported by the United Black Caucus, gathered outside the precinct where the incident occurred to voice their anguish and call for release of surveillance footage and the arresting officers' lapel video. Thomasina Cheatham, ardently searching for the truth, said, "I would like to see cameras. I want to see that my daughter hung herself. I don’t know what to believe."
Sanyah Cheatham was more than the last hours of her life—described as a bright and loving "A" student by her family, she had recently completed her freshman year at Bronx Community College. As seen by her brother, Javan's words to News 12, "Saniyah's not really a fighter," he expressed bewilderment over her arrest for disorderly conduct. Cheatham's fondness for writing and her strong academic record stand in stark contrast to what has transpired, fueling the family's skepticism and determination to pursue a deeper understanding of the situation.
The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the case, a standard procedure when someone dies in police custody. However, with contradictory accounts of the events and an incomplete report on the cause of death, the investigation remains shrouded in uncertainty.
