Seattle rang in the Fourth of July celebrations with widespread fireworks festivities that resulted in nearly 50 people requiring medical attention due to injuries sustained during the holiday weekend. Harborview Medical Center, serving as a critical hub for trauma care, saw a sharp increase in fireworks-related incidents. The Seattle Times reported the hospital treated 47 individuals as of Sunday morning. Among those injured, the severity ranged from hand injuries to serious ocular traumas.
Specifically, the breakdown of the hospital visits included 18 injuries involving hands — with at least one person losing a hand — 13 eye injuries, eight to other body areas, and another eight individuals having multiple injuries, as disclosed by KIRO 7. The sharp response from medical personnel underscores the hidden dangers that can overshadow celebratory occasions, especially when fireworks are involved.
The incidents were concentrated around the Fourth of July weekend, traditionally marked by an increased use of fireworks by individuals celebrating Independence Day. Harborview Medical Center, recognized as the sole designated level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center in Washington, was integral in addressing this sudden surge. The facility also extends its services as the regional trauma and burn center for Alaska, Idaho, and Montana, adding to its responsibilities during such critical times, per KOMO News.
