Yesterday's sailboat excursion turned into an emergency rescue on the St. Johns River near Julington Creek. First Coast News reported that a boat caught fire just after noon, threatening the lives of five individuals aboard.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR) teams, along with Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) and Clay County Fire Rescue, were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:15 p.m., as confirmed by SJCFR in an online statement. Upon arrival, rescuers found the vessel "fully involved" in flames, with its five occupants in the water. A local Good Samaritan and his eight-year-old son had already initiated the rescue, bringing the boaters to shore, as per First Coast News.
This timely intervention was highlighted further by Action News Jax, which detailed how Michael Shillingford and his young son, Vincent, were preparing to leave the area when Vincent spotted the distressed boat. With no injuries reported, the rescues were nothing short of fortunate, considering the potential peril at hand.
Following the rescue, a JFRD fireboat crew doused the remaining flames, as cited by News4Jax. All individuals had been wearing life jackets during the incident, a fact that likely played a critical role in ensuring their safety. The investigation into the fire's cause is currently underway by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, however, specifics about the origin of the blaze yet to be released.
The community's collective relief is palpable, edged with gratitude towards the quick-thinking actions of a man and his son who were at the right place at the right time to avert tragedy on the St. Johns River.
