Gunfire interrupted the Bronx’s Dominican Parade over the weekend. According to Gothamist, a series of incidents left two people dead and four others injured, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the violence.
As the parade came to a close yesterday, shots were heard near the Grand Concourse, causing panic among attendees. The NYPD is investigating whether the incident is directly connected to the parade, though no official link has been confirmed at this time. An eyewitness recounted the incident to NBC New York, saying, "I heard like two. At first, we thought it was fireworks, then when I was running, I heard the cops say, 'Shots fired, shots fired.'"
The multiple shootings began at around 6 p.m. near Elliot Place and Grand Concourse, where a 24-year-old male was shot, according to NYPD officials cited by Gothamist. Not long after, a 19-year-old was stabbed at Marcy Place and Grand Concourse. Subsequent violence included the shooting of a 19-year-old woman and a man near East 170th Street and Grand Concourse, and later in the evening, a 23-year-old man was shot in the Soundview area.
All of the victims from yesterday's disruption are expected to survive. No arrests have been made at this time, and the NYPD has encouraged the public to help by contacting Crime Stoppers with any relevant information.
Amid these disturbing events, it was also reported that the NYPD has managed to take more than 3,000 illegal firearms off city streets so far this year. This development stands in contrast to the earlier remarks by Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who had highlighted recent firearms seizures just hours before the incident occurred, as pointed out by NBC New York.
Two men, aged 21 and 22, were fatally shot in Throggs Neck. Their identities have not yet been released, as authorities are in the process of notifying their families. The NYPD has not identified a motive and is seeking two individuals believed to have fled the scene on a motorized scooter. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing, with officials working to establish the sequence of events that occurred during a gathering that coincided with a cultural celebration, according to the NYPD and reports from Gothamist.
